Resources for Stanford Physicians and Scientists
The WellMD & WellPhD Center leads and collaborates on a variety of programs aiming to address the various dimensions of physician well-being, including meaning, empowerment, engagement in work and reduction of stress.
Building Community and Connections
For example, physicians can build community and connections at Story Rounds, a series of live events the WellMD & WellPhD Center co-sponsors with Stanford’s Medicine and the Muse program. These events feature true spoken stories about life as a doctor, told by Stanford Medicine physicians themselves. With Commensality Groups — facilitated small discussion groups built around a tested evidence-based approach — the WellMD & WellPhD Center is aiming to increase the sense of connection and collegiality among physicians and build comradery and meaning in work.
Physicians can also gather with others interested in promoting well-being and professional fulfillment at a monthly, CME-accredited Physician Wellness Forum (PWF). At our annual Doctor’s Day event, held in March, we celebrate our physicians and the contributions they make to the community.

Stanford Medicine healthcare professionals share authentic stories about their lives and work at Story Rounds, which the WellMD & WellPhD Center co-sponsors with the Medicine and the Muse program.
Ongoing Learning and Updates
We know that time is an incredibly precious resource for physicians and scientists, so the WellMD & WellPhD Center offers bite-sized video updates and learning opportunities. For example, WellMD & WellPhD Minute is a video series highlighting various updates on the positive changes happening in Stanford practice or research environments.
Soon we will release a Personal Resilience Catalog containing information and exercises to help physicians and scientists practice skills, behaviors, and attitudes to build their personal resilience. We’ll also have a broad library of on-demand videos, courses, and modules about advancing physician well-being and professional fulfillment.
In addition to these resources, the WellMD & WellPhD Center collaborates with other Stanford Medicine programs to provide support that aims to reduce the unique stress and burdens that come with being a physician or research scientist. Physicians can connect one-on-one with a colleague trained to informally listen, provide perspective and resources, and help identify options through PRN Support. Residents and fellows can receive confidential mental health referral and consultation through WellConnect. Stanford’s Faculty and Staff Center offers a variety of services for the Stanford community including counseling, workshops, discussion groups, facilitated conversations, consultation and training, and retreat facilitation. All services are free of charge.
Finally, being a healthcare professional has been especially challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic. From childcare options to guidance about PPE and FAQs about getting tested, our COVID-19 Physician Resources page is a one-stop-shop for physicians looking for information and support during the COVID-19 outbreak.
