Professional Fulfillment Index

How We Measure Well-Being

The Professional Fulfillment Index (PFI) is a tool developed by the WellMD & WellPhD Center to assess physician well-being by measuring both burnout and professional fulfillment. The PFI is designed to be sensitive to changes that may occur due to various interventions or factors that impact professional fulfillment. This comprehensive approach to measuring well-being provides dynamic insights, enabling us to create targeted interventions to help improve the drivers of professional fulfillment in physicians and scientists.

In addition to its use by Stanford Medicine, the PFI is used by the Healthcare Professional Well-Being Academic Consortium (PWAC) to assess well-being and monitor benchmark data at member organizations. The PFI is also recognized by the National Academy of Medicine as one of the few validated and reliable survey instruments to measure well-being and burnout. Submit an inquiry below to learn more about obtaining permission to use the PFI at your organization.

Integrating the PFI With the Stanford Doctor and Scientist Surveys

To effectively assess physician well-being, the Professional Fulfillment Index (PFI) is integrated into the Stanford Doctor Survey™ and Stanford Scientist Survey™. The surveys are essential for evaluating the three key components of the Stanford Model of Occupational Well-Being™: Culture of Wellness, Workplace Efficiency, and Individual Factors. By analyzing the survey results, we can identify challenges and opportunities within departments, which facilitates meaningful discussions and strategic planning aimed at improving physician and scientist well-being.
